The new ShoreTel UC system went live over the school summer holidays in time for the start of the academic year.
Richard Huish College, a leading sixth form college in Taunton, Somerset, serves the South West of England and was ranked as the fourth top college in the UK for A-Level results in 2007. When the legacy phone system at the campus began reaching its end of life, the college's IT department selected the ShoreTel UC system over several other vendors' products because of its flexibility and reliability. The ShoreTel UC system enables staff to log and use their number from any phone, provides the receptionists with real-time presence information on staff availability, and offers a high level of resilience against failure through the unique and easy to manage distributed architecture.

Richard Huish College understood that IP telephony and UC technology had matured significantly since the last time it reviewed its phone system, and that it was now able to offer the reliability of a traditional PBX with the flexibility and productivity tools the college needs. With the assistance of ShoreTel EMEA Partner of the Year, Solar Communications, the college evaluated a number of systems, including Cisco and Avaya, and selected ShoreTel as it was the easiest to install and maintain, most resilient, and feature-rich. After an on-site comparative trial with a cross section of college staff, ShoreTel was also selected as the easiest UC system to use. College IT staff is planning to use the ShoreTel's open API to develop some key links to existing databases that will help further communication enhancements right into the classroom.
